We had few newcomers this weekend. They wanted to know the installation steps for Ubuntu. Hence, Mr. Shanmugasundaram showed live dual boot Ubuntu 11.04 installation in a laptop.

It took half an hour to explain those steps.

Next, Mr. Rajkumar gave information about Software Configuration Management(SCM) , what it is, why it is used for, and its different types(VCS-Version Control System, CVS-Concurrent Version System, SVN-Subversion, Bazaar, Mercurial, Git). Now people had some understanding about SCM.

After Mr. Rajkumar’s brief explanation, I (Selvamani) started to give the demo on Basics of Git. I created a folder which has two files and made it as Git repository. Once Git Repository initiated, i explained some folders and files information created by Git such as hooks, info, objects, refs, config, HEAD, description. I also explained that how Git is making version numbers for every commit, and SHA(Secure Hash Algorithm) and RSA key(public and private keys) which is used for server git repository access.

Moreover, i showed them demo using basic commands like status, add, commit, log, tag. Meanwhile, i cleared their queries and doubts.

* Happiest news is that KanchiLUG is going to hit 100th Week successfully. Hence, we have some plan to celebrate this achievement.
